Romex develop new reports to measure driver behaviour
Both Private and Public sector organisations are increasingly concerned with how their employees
drive - and not just because better driving saves money on fuel and other running costs,
reduces 'Bent Metal' costs and insurance premiums, and lowers carbon emissions.
Many organisations are actively looking at ways to improve work related road safety because driving
on business is the biggest single occupational killer in the UK. 20 people die every week driving on
business, and a further 250 are seriously injured. Statistically, this makes it the most likely cause for
a company to be prosecuted under the Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide Act.
To help companies improve work related road safety Romex has developed two new reports which
enable management to measure key elements of driver behaviour and, therefore, manage risk. Both
support exception based reporting and user defined thresholds which means that every company
can set their own performance criteria in line with their 'Work Related Road Safety Policy'. With
every company with more than 6 employees required to have such a policy in place under Health
and Safety legislation, this means that companies using these new reports can measure and manage
risks properly - potentially for the first time.
The first report measures three key elements of driver behaviour; speeding, making long journeys
without a break (e.g. more than 2 hours) and driving on business after working for too many hours
(e.g. more than 12 hours).
The second report measures behaviour that can affect driving; making and receiving voice calls and
sending text messages.
By managing speeding, avoiding fatigue and minimising distraction whilst driving on business,
companies can not only improve the safety of their employees but they can also minimise the
chance of prosecution under Health and Safety legislation. And all this regardless of whether
the vehicle driven by the employee is company owned or their own vehicle, making it usable by
both 'Blue Collar' and 'White Collar' employees and delivering benefits right the way across the
organisation.
